Ampersand

Forterra is the state of Washington’s largest land conservation organization dedicated solely to the region. As Forterra’s focus expanded to include developing healthy cities, Ampersand magazine was conceived as a new way to engage a broad audience. Hum worked closely with the Forterra team to imagine Ampersand’s first issue, developing the publication’s creative strategy and visual direction.

Though small in size (7-by-10 inches; 40 pages), Ampersand is highly considered, smart, and sometimes edgy. Using a minimal and economical typeface, rich photography, and an open layout, the final design balances an eco-friendly aesthetic with an urban editorial feel. Distribution has grown steadily, and each issue successfully promotes Ampersand’s well attended corresponding live event at Town Hall Seattle, proving Ampersand a productive tool in building conversation and support for Forterra’s mission.
