Vinyl by Number

Paint by Number kits were popularized in the 1950s with the idea than anyone can create a masterpiece with just a little guidance. This approach perfectly demonstrates the optimism of the fifties. Formally, Paint by Numbers are also completely of their idealized time. The scenes were serene and simple: a deer grazing on grass, a brook babbling past. The separated colors resemble the beginnings of color photography: the over-saturated reds and yellows, awkwardly edging up against the undersaturated blacks of kodachrome prints. This self initiated project combines a beloved technique with typographic and stylized album covers.
