What Comes To Mind?
It is difficult to pinpoint where the power of an appropriated image comes from. Is it in the subliminal history of the image’s original context, or is meaning created through new pairings and associations? “What Comes to Mind: Associative Flashcards” is a deck of twenty-seven 4 x 6" double sided cards. Each is printed on heavy card stock with rounded corners. The front of every card features an image removed from its original context. Some of the images are well known while others come from obscure original sources. Overlaid over each image is a letter of the alphabet, printed in upper and lower case, referencing early education learning tools. This form instructs viewers to make connections between the image and the letter printed over it.
